Five Things Fashion Can Teach Us About Branding

11 / 20 / 16 12 / 23 / 17

How are you from the last time you read my blog?

If you are new, welcome to my blog!

Today’s guest post is from my dear friend Ursha! She will be sharing with you 5 tips as fashionistas that you can use in your branding.

Don’t forget to check the sidebar and footer of this website for awesome resources!

branding fashion tips for your businessBranding is a frequently discussed topic in the online business industry, yet as a fashionista entrepreneur you might not quite understand it yet and struggle to make your branding communicate the right message in the right way to your audience.

Let me show you a few tips from the fashion industry and how to use them to understand the underlying principles that make up a good brand.

You will be able to apply these tips right away, and in the end, it will help you to make your brand look more stylish, polished, and consistent online. Let’s dive in!

Tip #1 All the pieces of your brand need to look like they belong to the same collection.

Fashion and branding are not that dissimilar. In fashion, all the pieces of a fashion collection including the jackets, shoes, purses, skirts, etc. need to combine well together. It is the same with brand identity.

All the pieces of your brand identity need to look like they belong to the same collection and need to be structured in a way so that each piece combines well with another.

Imagine if you would separate all the elements of your brand, the colors, the fonts, the patterns, etc. those elements should be able to combine and rearrange in several ways without your brand losing its visual consistency.

So when deciding on your brand’s colors, patterns, and fonts make sure they all look good together and can be used in several different combinations. Each combination should strengthen your brand’s visual identity.

Tip #2 Less is always more in fashion and branding

We hear the phrase “less is more” in the fashion and beauty industries often. But what about in branding?

In branding we often hear about the importance of a “clean design” but what exactly does this mean?

Does this mean that you shouldn’t combine too many styles together or that you shouldn’t combine too many colors together?

Well sometimes, but not necessarily. There are brands out there that use multicolor palettes and combine multiple styles together and get away with it just fine still looking very “clean”.

They are able to pull it off because they are using the “less is more” principle.

Imagine using the “less is more” principle when applying to your branding, simply means that in each separate manifestation of your brand, whether that be a logo, a post, a banner image, you need to resist the tendency to stuff all the elements of your branding into that one single piece.

Even though your brand might have a lot of different ways it visually expresses itself, you need to make sure you are not trying to show it all at once. Every time you are putting together an image post or creating a cover image, you need to make sure you are applying “less is more” principle and are choosing only a few elements to combine.

Tip #3 Never wear two dominant colors/patterns/styles in one look

In fashion, we often hear, “big eyes or red lips but never both at the same time.” Or “never wear two bright and highly saturated colors in one look.”

The same rules apply in branding.

Let’s say you have two very saturated and bright colors as part of your brand. Hot pink and yellow. When designing your post images, decide which one will be the dominant one for each post and use the other one just as a supporting color.

The secondary color should always be used to a lesser extent than the primary color.

Using colors in this way will make your brand’s visual identity appear more grounded and professional. That will subconsciously communicate to your ideal client that working with you will be a calm experience and that they can trust you because they are dealing with a professional.

On the contrary, when the colors of your brand are all over the place and scream too loudly that communicates to your ideal client that working with you will be a chaotic and overwhelming experience. The more visually grounded your branding is, the more trustworthy and professional you will appear.

This communication is happening on a deep subconscious level of course.

Tip #4 Use principle of “matching” to enhance brand consistency

Our brains are wired in a way that they always look for patterns, and they feel very uncomfortable if they can’t find those patterns.

When I talk about “patterns” here I mean similarities or repeating elements.

So to make someone subconsciously feel comfortable when engaging with your brand it is important to use the principle of “matching” in your brand identity.

Matching translated into the language used in branding would be called “consistency.”

You will achieve a brand consistency by visually “matching” pieces of your brand together.

In fashion, matching manifests as wearing red shoes and red lipstick in one look or wearing a gold belt with a purse that has a gold buckle.

In branding this would manifest as follows:

You would have a lined pattern in your branding, and it would appear in your posts as a background. Then that same pattern would appear in the skirt you are wearing in your banner image.

Matching elements serve the purpose of visually tying the pieces of your brand together.

Pick one to three elements that you will use in every single visual manifestation of your brand.

Maybe it is a gold overlay in your logo that you will then repeat as a gold background and then use in every single image post. Or perhaps it is a specific color and pattern combination that you will repeatedly use in all of your cover images and posts. The choice is yours.

Tip #5 Accessorize

Just as wearing the right accessories can make your outfit look more expensive, using detailed elements in your branding will make your brand look a higher quality.

Expressing an attention to detail communicates to your ideal client that you are a person who pays attention and cares. Again, this is happening at a subconscious level.

For example, let’s say that you have a dotted circle as part of your logo. Repeating that same element in a post in a different way will show that you are paying attention to details.

Or let’s say you use lines in your logo. Decorating your posts with those same type of lines will make you look like you are someone who notices small things and cares about good quality.

This will show that you are someone who is conscious about details and pays attention to small things.

I hope this post has helped you better understand branding.

Style your workspace the Right Way

11 / 6 / 16 1 / 3 / 18

How are you from the last time you read my blog?

If you are new, welcome to my blog!

Today’s post is all about styling and creating your workspace to reflect your brand so that when you are at work your personal touches will be reflected in your workspace and will help you to stimulate your creative juices.

What am I referring to? I will let Gabrielle talk some more about this.

Hello there, you beautiful and talented fashionista, you! Spring fashion is underway and I’m sure you’ve already been working on securing those new season staples.

While you’re checking out the newest trends for the season, don’t forget about getting things updated in that all-too-important workspace of yours. Yes, you read that right. Your workspace: the office, the studio, that little corner of your dining room or kitchen.

I know you’re a fashion lover, but I also know that you’re a budding boss lady putting in a lot of work to build and grow your business. You spend some serious time in that work area, so you should make it feel comforting in some way.

Getting your work environment to match your personality is just as important as throwing on your signature-style dress and your favorite MAC lipstick and liner. I’ve got a few ways to help you upgrade and breathe easier in your workspace.

Get colorful with your workspace!

Say, “No,” to white/beige walls and that solitary peace of art of the beach that you picked up at Home Goods.

Don’t forget to check the sidebar and footer of this website for awesome resources!

style your workspace

Your office, whether you expect visitors or not, is another part of your brand.

It’s just as important as your logo, your business card or your website, not to mention is another representation of your personality.

Paint goes a long way to upgrading your surroundings and adding some of “you” in the space. If you’re not into a lot of colors, that’s ok too. There are plenty of patterns out there that you could utilize to liven up the bare walls.

Get “colorful” by adding decals, wallpaper or using paint techniques to add pattern and a sense of depth.

Create your workspace with a visual business plan.

As your brand shows the world what your business is about, your business plan keeps you focused on where you’re going for yourself and any investors involved in your business. I’m sure as a business owner boss lady you’ve spent plenty of time, money, or both, on creating and finalizing your perfect business plan.

Now take that a step further and make it a part of your workspace décor. Create a collage of ideas, a poster of a presentation, or an infographic that you can frame and stick on the wall.

Worried about visitors being able to get a glimpse of your plans before you’re ready to roll them out? No problem. Get a double-sided frame and put your favourite quote on a brand-centered stock photo. Flip the frame over whenever you host a meeting.

Add your favourite knick-knacks to desks, walls, and shelving.

I’ve mentioned brand a lot in this post, and here’s another thing you have to remember: You are your brand. You are the face of your business. So what does that mean for your office space? It means that anyone should be able to enter your office and see, well, YOU.

Adding décor pieces is one of the easiest ways to add your personal touches, and it may not cost you anything at all if you have these items already laying around.

If you like collecting spring globes, have a spring globe or two, or ten. Does having family photos invigorate and encourage you? Clear a space on one wall and leave it open just for your favorite memories? Are you just a lover of office supplies? Create “seasons” with all your office décor and switch things up now and then.

Having personal touches in your workspace helps to stimulate your creative juices. Some business owners are laser focused on building a business. That’s great and commendable, but working in an environment that is properly put together adds value to your working experience.

Seriously, you are an awesome woman with an awesome personality and sick style. Show that personality when you’re working, too. You and your business are not two separate entities, and it’s time we stopped treating them like they are. Get personal and see how your entire outlook on work changes with the upgrades to your atmosphere.

Could Your Personal Style be Losing You Opportunities?

10 / 2 / 16 12 / 23 / 17

How are you from the last time you read my blog?

If you are new, welcome to my blog!

Today’s post is all about knowing and creating your personal style and allowing it to reflect your brand without saying much to your prospective as well as current clients. What am I referring to? I will let Luisa talk some more about this.

We are a society who as a whole is lured into spending our money, time and interest on everything that is visually attractive. How many times have you been blown away by luxury packaging?

Can you count the times you’ve wanted to buy an item that was more pleasing to the eye than its mediocre counterpart? How important is your personal appearance and could you be losing opportunities by not investing time and effort into maintaining your very own presentable style?

This got me thinking about the importance of style and personal image, not only for visual purposes but in order to help you present yourself to the best of your ability in both your business and personal life.

Don’t forget to check the sidebar and footer of this website for awesome resources!

personal style

Are you hiding behind a required suit?

For some job roles, you may be required to dress in a certain way or meet a certain level of dress code. In some cases when a job role doesn’t require such, some service providers come to the conclusion that if there are no strict rules for their work wear, they don’t need to focus on their presentation skills either.

The truth is that even if your job role requires you to wear a suit every day, it doesn’t instantly guarantee that you will look smart and be able to present yourself and your company in the right way. After all, it isn’t what you wear – it’s how you wear it! I’ve met so many females who struggle to dress for business.

Your personal style needs to start dressing for success!

So you are trying your best to stay well clear of jeans, you often drag out an ill-fitting suit in an unflattering colour from decades ago, or you may end up looking like a child who has raided your parents’ wardrobe by wearing clothing that is far too old for you.

Other issues that I’ve experienced – a very common one actually, is business people who hide behind their visual branding and feel as though they are the “let down” if/when they come to meet with clients and business partners in person.”

It is easy to hide behind amazing branding online, but at some point, your clients have to deal with you and if you feel as though you lack style and presentation skills then your client will see that too!

Your business branding (i.e. your business cards, logo, posters and web design etc.) is very important for your business but no matter how good your business branding and other business tools are, you cannot get away with being the “mediocre part of your business.”

You should never overlook the fact that you (and only you) are the best possible tool in your business so you need to work that to your advantage. You are the face of your business and let’s be honest, it’s always better for every face to belong to a happy, pleasant looking person that appears confident and comfortable when you see them!

Stand out from the crowd and claim your personal style!

I’m not just a stylist who knows about the important of style in business; I am living proof that a solid personal brand has the ability to take your business to wherever you want it to go.

If you’re struggling to get your head around all of this, think of “bad style and poor personal branding” as a big, ugly spot on your face that you can’t disguise. It would knock your confidence when meeting new people and when trying to talk business, it might prevent you from looking and feeling your best thus, you are unable to present yourself in the way you’d hoped.

When you look your personal best, you feel amazing about yourself and when that happens, that transcends across every aspect of your life, including through your communication and presentation skills!

Style doesn’t have to be expensive, cruel, unethical or uncomfortable. Some of my most favoured looks have been outfits that have cost no more than £10 – but appear as though they’ve cost far more! Don’t confuse style with dressing up!

Dressing up means adapting an appearance that isn’t usually you and that can be difficult to pull off every day. Few of us have hours to spend on our appearances, so we try to focus on what you can achieve in a short space of time.

Let me help you dress better and find colours and styles that suit you for your next business engagement.
